I am so grateful to have been asked to speak at the 2014 Hawai’i Library Association Fall Conference was held on December 5 – 6, 2014 at the Kahala Hotel and Resort. This year’s theme was Advocacy at Your Library: Opportunities, Challenges, and Innovations and I was asked to present on the social media success of the UHM LIS Web Team’s YouTube channel while I was team captain from 2013 – 2014.
In recent years, organizations have jumped at the opportunity to use social media to market their services or brand to millions through recognizable platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Although some libraries are wary of marketing practices or creating a brand, it is important for libraries to show their continued influence and need within the community and also meet the expectations of digital native users.
What better way to do this than through social media? In this session I discussed the challenges the UHM LIS Web Team faced and which lead to the creation of the official UHM LIS Web Team YouTube Channel, as well as the opportunities it has created outside of the UHM LIS program. In this presentation, I briefly cover the different ways that libraries can utilize social media to market their services as well as helpful suggestions for maintenance and use.
